Electrolytes and isotonic drinks are often spoken about as though they do the same job. The practical difference is carbohydrate. Electrolyte-only drinks mainly provide fluid and minerals such as sodium. Isotonic drinks such as KMC ISO MIX combine fluid and electrolytes with carbohydrate, so the drink contributes to both hydration and fuelling.

All isotonic sports drinks contain electrolytes, but not every electrolyte drink is isotonic or provides a meaningful amount of energy. The right choice depends on whether you need your bottle to hydrate you, fuel you, or do both.

Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals involved in fluid balance, nerve signalling and muscle function. Sodium is normally the principal electrolyte considered when replacing sweat losses, although drinks may also contain potassium, magnesium and calcium.

An isotonic sports drink contains electrolytes too. What separates it from most electrolyte-only drinks is a meaningful concentration of carbohydrate. This allows it to contribute usable energy during exercise rather than supporting hydration alone.

The Australian Institute of Sport distinguishes electrolyte-replacement products, which are useful when little or no carbohydrate is wanted, from sports drinks designed to deliver carbohydrate and fluid together.[1][2]

What is an electrolyte drink?

An electrolyte drink mixes minerals with fluid. Products vary considerably, so the word “electrolyte” alone does not tell you how much sodium, carbohydrate or energy the drink provides.

Electrolyte-only drinks are useful when replacing fluid and minerals is the main goal. Examples include shorter sessions in hot conditions, athletes with high sweat losses, recovery between demanding sessions, or longer exercise where carbohydrate is deliberately supplied through gels, bars or food.

Many contain very little carbohydrate. That can be useful when energy is not required, but it also means the drink cannot cover the fuelling demands of a long or hard session by itself.

An electrolyte drink can support hydration. It does not automatically provide enough carbohydrate to fuel endurance exercise.

What is an isotonic drink?

In sports nutrition, an isotonic drink is prepared at a concentration designed to deliver fluid, electrolytes and carbohydrate together. Typical sports drinks contain around 4–8g carbohydrate per 100ml, although formulations vary.[2]

This makes an isotonic drink useful when the bottle needs to perform two jobs: helping replace fluid and electrolytes while contributing energy. It can simplify nutrition during long runs, rides, triathlons and races because carbohydrate is consumed gradually with every sip.

Isotonic does not mean universally superior. The drink still needs to be mixed correctly, tolerated during exercise and counted within the athlete's total carbohydrate plan.

KMC ISO MIX example

One 37g serving of KMC ISO MIX mixed with 500ml water provides 34g carbohydrate, 144mg sodium and four electrolytes. Its 6.8g carbohydrate per 100ml sits within the typical concentration range for a carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink.

The three jobs your endurance nutrition plan must cover

1. Fluid

Fluid needs change with temperature, intensity, body size, sweat rate, clothing and access to drinks. There is no single hourly volume that suits every athlete. Build a realistic drinking plan in training and adjust it for the conditions.

2. Electrolytes, especially sodium

Sweat contains water and electrolytes. Sodium is generally the main mineral considered in a sports hydration strategy, but sweat concentration and total losses vary substantially between athletes. More sodium is not automatically better.

3. Carbohydrate

Carbohydrate is the component that provides meaningful energy during prolonged or hard exercise. Common evidence-based starting ranges are adjusted by duration and intensity:

  • Brief exercise under about 45 minutes: carbohydrate during the session is generally unnecessary.
  • Sustained high-intensity exercise lasting around 45–75 minutes: small amounts, including a carbohydrate mouth rinse, may be useful.
  • Endurance exercise lasting around 1–2.5 hours: approximately 30–60g carbohydrate per hour is a common starting range.
  • Events longer than roughly 2.5–3 hours: trained athletes may target up to about 90g per hour using multiple transportable carbohydrates such as maltodextrin or glucose plus fructose.

These are ranges rather than compulsory targets. Intake should reflect the session, the athlete's goals and what their gut has been trained to tolerate.[3][4][5]

Before every long session, ask:

  1. Where is my fluid coming from?
  2. Where are my electrolytes coming from?
  3. Where is my carbohydrate coming from?

An isotonic drink can contribute to all three. An electrolyte-only drink covers the first two, leaving carbohydrate to another product.

Which should you use for each type of session?

Short, easy sessions

For many athletes, water is sufficient for a short, easy session in mild conditions. An electrolyte drink may be useful when it is hot, sweat losses are unusually high, the session follows another demanding workout or normal food and fluid intake has been disrupted.

An isotonic drink is not wrong, but its carbohydrate may be unnecessary when the session is brief and easy.

Sessions lasting 60–120 minutes

This is where the choice becomes more individual. An electrolyte-only drink works when carbohydrate is supplied separately. An isotonic drink can simplify the plan by contributing energy with every sip.

Check how many grams of carbohydrate the complete bottle supplies, then compare that with the amount you intend to consume across the session.

Long runs, long rides and events over two hours

Longer endurance exercise normally benefits from a deliberate carbohydrate strategy. An isotonic drink can provide a steady contribution from the bottle, while gels, bars or food complete the total intake.

An electrolyte-only drink can work equally well as the hydration component, but it must be paired with a clear energy source. Electrolytes have not secretly become lunch because the session is long.

Hot weather and heavy sweating

Heat generally increases fluid and electrolyte losses, but the answer is not automatically to double the concentration. Follow the mixing instructions. Adding extra powder changes the formulation and may make the drink harder to tolerate.

What should runners use?

Runners have limited carrying capacity, so simplicity matters. Water may be enough for short easy runs. During long runs and marathon training, an isotonic drink can contribute fluid, electrolytes and carbohydrate, while gels provide a compact way to increase total energy intake.

An electrolyte-only drink can also work when paired with measured gels. The best system is the one the runner can carry, consume and tolerate consistently at the intended pace.

What should cyclists use?

Cyclists can normally carry more fluid and nutrition than runners, making bottle-based fuelling particularly practical. An isotonic drink allows carbohydrate to be consumed gradually while riding. An electrolyte-only bottle works when bars, gels or food provide the energy.

On long rides, some athletes use one bottle containing carbohydrate and another focused on hydration. This offers flexibility, but every source still needs to be counted within the complete plan.

What about triathlon and ultra-endurance events?

Long events need a flexible strategy because intensity, temperature, terrain and aid-station access can change. Separate fluid, electrolytes and carbohydrate, then decide which products will cover each job.

Can you combine electrolyte drinks and energy gels?

Yes. This is one of the simplest ways to separate hydration from fuel. The drink supplies fluid and electrolytes, while gels supply a known amount of carbohydrate.

The reverse approach also works: an isotonic drink supplies part of the carbohydrate requirement, with gels added for the remainder. Count carbohydrate from every source so the drink is not accidentally ignored—or counted twice.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming electrolytes provide energy

Electrolytes are minerals, not a meaningful source of calories. Check the carbohydrate value per prepared bottle to understand whether the drink also contributes fuel.

Treating electrolyte drinks and isotonic drinks as identical

Both contain electrolytes. The practical difference is that an isotonic sports drink also supplies a meaningful carbohydrate concentration.

Assuming isotonic automatically means better

An isotonic drink is useful when carbohydrate is wanted from the bottle. An electrolyte-only drink may be more appropriate when fuel is unnecessary or supplied separately.

Over-concentrating the drink

Adding extra powder changes the concentration, carbohydrate delivery and taste. Follow the stated preparation instructions unless a qualified practitioner has provided a specific alternative that has been tested in training.

Treating cramp as proof of an electrolyte deficiency

Exercise-associated muscle cramp is considered multifactorial. Hydration and electrolyte balance may matter for some athletes, but cramp is not reliably explained—or prevented—by simply consuming more electrolytes.[6]

Copying elite-level carbohydrate targets

Intakes above 90g per hour are being researched and used by some athletes, but they are not an automatic upgrade. Current evidence is stronger for conventional guidance of up to around 90g per hour during prolonged exercise.[7]

Testing products separately but not together

A drink and gel may each feel comfortable on their own. The full combination still needs to be practised at realistic intensity.

How to build your hydration and fuelling strategy

  1. Define the session. Note duration, intensity, conditions and access to fluid.
  2. Choose the bottle's role. Decide whether it will provide hydration and electrolytes only or contribute carbohydrate too.
  3. Calculate carbohydrate from the drink. Do this before adding gels, bars or food.
  4. Check sodium across the complete plan. Avoid unnecessary duplication.
  5. Plan caffeine separately. Count every source and follow product labels.
  6. Practise at event intensity. A plan tested while standing in the kitchen has not yet been tested.
  7. Record and refine. Note intake, conditions, comfort and performance after key sessions.
